Why this newsletter?

U.S. foreign policy is way too important - and too complicated - to be glossed over in news headlines and social media posts. This newsletter aims to take readers on a deep dive into how strategies, policies, and plans are formulated, implemented, and evaluated within the U.S. Government.

Who is the author?

Michael Walsh is a public intellectual who specializes in U.S. diplomacy:

  • As a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, he conducts policy analysis on the strategies, policies, and plans of the U.S. Government.

  • As a Visiting Scholar at the University of California Berkeley, he uses exploratory data analysis and structured analytic techniques to bridge the gap between theory and practice in U.S. foreign policy.

  • As the President of Future Continuum, he teaches graduate students and business leaders about the ins and outs of continuity planning, global posturing, and strategic alignment.

  • As an Occasional Lecturer at the Foreign Service Institute, he teaches foreign policy making and planning to U.S. foreign service officers.

  • On a U.S. Presidential Campaign, he was the lead author on multiple regional policy papers and served as a member of the presidential briefing support team.

Why the name?

Consilium Strategicum (Latin: Strategic Counsel) is a nod to the historical contributions of the Ancients that enabled the emergence of the field of diplomacy.
